Abstract
Vision is an important sense for many animals, including humans. The ability to see generates high metabolic costs, yet this investment seems to be worth the effort. Despite their relatively poor acuity, mice have developed into a model organism for vision. Their retina contains different types of photoreceptors and, in principle, they are also able to discriminate colors. What can we say about the evolution of murine visual physiology, and which visual capabilities can be derived from it? Is color vision at all beneficial for their survival, and which neuronal circuits are required to fully exploit it?
